Childhood Obesity in America

gaspersa7's avatarSam Gasper-- Reflections on Current Issues & Policy

Access to food in the United States is rarely debated.

However, access to nutritious food and healthy habits has become a prevalent issue among Americans –particularly children.

What implications does the health of our children have on future society?

Overweight two to five years-olds face exponential health risks.  For example, children between the ages of three and five who are overweight are five times more likely to become obese as adults. Other risk factors include heart disease, stroke, cancer, among other threats to health and well-being.

However, rates of obesity in children have decreased in the last 10 years according to of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).  Cynthia L. Ogden, “This is the first time we’ve seen any indication of any significant decrease in any group.”

What explains this change in trends?  What strategies or policies are affecting this change?

Joel Mc”Hale” the Seattle Seahawks

Love Joel McHale!!! He has not only done this for the Seahawks, but also for celebrities or television shows he believes in. I loved how he partnered with the television show Cougar Town, the cast members did cameos in the backgrounds of each other’s shows. I believe it helped to save both programs on separate networks.

LONDON! And the GRAMMYS! Not Grandmas! But old ladies are cool too!

If only we all could live our lives like Mary Lambert. Her stories here about London and the Grammys are truly wonderful, but what makes them real and inspiring to me is Mary’s humility and ability to see the glass half full, whether she was performing at the Grammys or was working as a bartender. Her perseverence motivates me to focus and keep trekking on. Remember this: “Things don’t go wrong and break your heart so you can become bitter and give up. They happen to break you down and build you up so you can be all that you were intended to be.” ~Charlie Jones~

Woah babes. I have so much on my mind. And I haven’t talked to my therapist in a hot minute, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

First things first- I’m in LONDON! This place is so cool. I’ve had fish and chips, Indian food, went shopping, gotten freaked out by cars going the wrong way, sang a lot of songs, caught myself speaking with an accent in my head, took a bus tour, walked in the rain, saw a guy pee outside, ate really really really good sourdough toast, been homesick, and recorded a REALLY COOL new song. I have yet to watch a single episode of AbFab. Is that sacrilegious?

I’m recording here, working with Eg White (see what he did there?), and we’re making SUCH COOL MUSIC. In LA, I’m working with Benny Cassette (WHO MAKES REALLY COOL DRUM SOUNDS AMONG OTHER THINGS), and Eric Rosse (AHHHH…

Dylan Farrow’s sex assault claims against Woody Allen

On ABC’s “The View” today, Barbara Walters went against her panel of women in defense of Woody Allen. She said she can vouch for Woody Allen and the wonderful husband and father he is now. Can anyone really vouch for someone else as a father or husband if it’s not their own. Has she lived with them? Does she have cameras in his house that witness what happens behind closed doors? I loved how Sherri Shepherd, another co-host, pointed out that Barbara’s words were quite familiar. They are the same words we always hear on the news right after a tragedy, whether it’s a school shooting, domestic violence act, a case similar to Sandusky, and so on. The neighbors and friends who are interviewed always say, “He or she was the nicest person. I would never think they were capable of doing this.” Other co-host, Jenny McCarthy pointed out that the girl has nothing to gain by coming forward. I agree. Barbara pointed out, though, that no charges were ever brought against Mr. Allen. What she didn’t point out is that it was also during another day and age where it was harder to get those type of charges brought to light. Also, she never mentioned the statistics for children who recall sexual abuse. There is only a 4 percent chance that the child is lying. Children have no reason to make something like that up. This girl has had to live with the horror and had to deal with it in her own time. She should’t have to apologize that she has come forward during award season. Woody Allen doesn’t like receiving awards anyways. Maybe there’s more to his secrecy and hermit like behavior than meets the eye. Why does Barbara Walters treat Mr. Allen like the victim? Victims will never feel safe coming forward if people continue to protect the abusers in our society based on their economic and social status.

Coca-Cola Waves an American Flag, but America Wants to Stop the Wind

Thought provoking post! Have Americans forgot we are known for being the melting pot of the world. I love this ad by Coca-cola and hope others will follow suit and embrace the diversity our country is built upon. Diversity is a beautiful thing.

mkaelarchon92's avatarCollege & Travel Log

Coca-Cola featured a controversial ad during Super Bowl XLVII commercials showcasing America’s multiracial identity in correspondence with the world’s most popular soda brand.

The title, “America the Beautiful,” implies that the commercial is going to be ‘Bout Good Ole ‘Merica; but as soon as the vocalist switches from singing the song in English, to signing in Spanish, then to Portuguese, to French, Arabic, Hindi, Tagalog, and so on, back to English, the message of the ad changes.

This particular ad gave off the impression that diversity should be celebrated because America is now mainly composed of multiple ethnicity and languages. Praised by much of the populous, this ad was well received, but for others, the thought of drinking another coke brought a strange taste to their mouths.

Coca-Cola was quick to infer how many of their viewers were dissatisfied at the content of the ad. Many conservatives responded negatively. They…

Idiocy on MLK Day

How is something like this still happening 46 years after Martin Luther King Jr’s death? Has our society become so complacent that we are forgetting what he sacrificed to obtain civil liberties for all citizens?

mkaelarchon92's avatarCollege & Travel Log

An Arizona State Frat hosted a party on Martin Luther King Jr.’s commemoration Holiday. Uncalled for and overly racist, the party hit the fan.

ASU’s Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity held an unregistered  “MLK Black Party,” inviting party-goers to “dress like black people.”

Those who attended appeared to fit the stereotype; wearing tall basketball jerseys, sagging pants, drinking from watermelon cups, and flashing gang signs. All of which aired on the attendees’ social media networks.

As a consequence, the university suspended all operations of the fraternity and is taking action against the individuals involved.

Since 2012, the fraternity has been on disciplinary probation with the university, prohibiting TKE members to host parties.

Looking at the situation from a Public Relations perspective, TKE members who partook in the festivities have influence on ASU’s image- as representatives of a national fraternity. This is precisely why the university acted as quickly as it had.

Same Love for Macklemore & The Grammys?

I love Macklemore, the Grammy Awards, and CBS even more!

ShannonPLowry's avatarShameless PR (COM 475)

So, the Grammy Awards airs tonight. I don’t know about you, but I’m anticipating some of my favorite artist’s big performances and big wins. One of my favorite artists and a Seattle favorite, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are set to perform “Same Love,” the biggest pro-marriage-equality song of 2014.

While debate is still swirling the U.S. over same-sex marriage laws, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are taking the center stage. During their big performance tonight, 34 couples, of different ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations, will be married live.

Ryan Lewis stated that the ceremonies will show that “all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing.” Hence, “Same Love.”

Talk about a PR stunt, and not one that will reflect badly on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, but on the Grammy Awards and CBS network. Everyone already knows that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis support marriage equality, but what kind of opinion…
